Democratic Services Officer

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

The Role

Looking to develop a career in local government and governance?  This is a great opportunity to support local democracy, work with and alongside politicians and senior officers across all departments, as well as to provide advice and information to members of the public.

Whether you are looking for your first job in this area or want to build on your experience, we are looking for two highly motivated people to join our democratic services team. You will be based mainly in Wandsworth, but you may be required to work flexibly across both boroughs, as necessary.

These are career graded posts. We are currently looking to recruit one person at the entry/intermediate level (SO2 – PO2) and one at an upper level (PO3-PO4). We welcome applications for job-sharing.

For the entry/intermediate level position, we will support your development and you will develop a solid knowledge of the constitutional and legislative framework for local authority decision making and an ability to provide detailed advice to elected members and senior officers.  You will be able to analyse complex documents or discussions and extract and summarise the key points.  You will also be able to demonstrate that you have strong communication skills, political sensitivity, effective prioritisation skills and an ability to work well in a team.

For the upper level, in addition to the above, we are looking for a candidate who has experience of dealing with complex and/or demanding responsibilities in relation to governance processes, formal decision-making committees and queries from elected politicians, with minimal supervision.

If you would like to find out more about the jobs, please contact Chris Kelly, Democratic Services Manager  on 020 8871 6021 or chris.kelly@richmondandwandsworth.gov.uk or Peter Sass, Head of Governance on 020 8871 6005 or peter.sass@richmondandwandsworth.gov.uk

In return, we can offer you a wide range of developmental opportunities and working arrangements that will enhance your work-life balance.  These include home working (dependent on service need), and a generous holiday allowance of 31 days plus bank holidays.

In addition, we offer a range of staff benefits such as membership of the Local Government contributory pension scheme, childcare vouchers, new technology scheme, interest-free loans on annual travel cards, discounts at many leisure activities, restaurants, shops, and other establishments.
