Cabinet Support and Policy Officer

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

About Us

Sitting at the heart of the Council, you will be part of a team providing fast-paced support to the Wandsworth Council’s Leader and Cabinet.

You’ll be joining us at an exciting time of change - working with a new political administration to support the delivery of their vision for a fairer, compassionate, more sustainable borough.

Working to the Head of Leader’s Office, these are exciting roles in which you will provide administrative support, policy and research support, policy casework and briefings to the Leader and the Cabinet to ensure they are able to make effective decisions, communicate their work, and able to work in partnership with residents, businesses, stakeholders, and communities. Sitting in our wider Chief Executive’s Group, you will be perfectly placed to work collaboratively with our policy, comms and governance teams as well as colleagues across the Council.

We’re looking for people who are passionate about making a difference with an opportunity to work in a new team where new ideas are welcomed, and creativity is encouraged. You’ll need to be highly organised and adaptable, and you’ll have the ability to balance a heavy workload with fixed deadlines and timescales.

You will be a confident communicator in person and in writing. You will be able to work to tight deadlines, with competing demands, on your own initiative. You should have experience of preparing concise and impactful briefings and policy papers for elected politicians or senior managers. You should be abreast of how the changing regional and national policy landscape might affect and provide opportunities for Wandsworth and its residents.

You will have a good understanding of the political environment, and the role of the Leader’s Office in supporting the Leader and Cabinet as non-political staff. We’re looking for people who enjoy working with others, people who are good at relationship building, and who have the confidence to operate with key stakeholders at the highest levels of the Council.

We actively promote diversity and specifically welcome applications from people from diverse backgrounds.

At Richmond and Wandsworth Councils, we care more about how you work and what you achieve, rather than where you work on any given day. The difference you can make to our local communities is what really matters most to us, service delivery must always come first. We have carefully considered agile ways of working to provide the best experience for residents, stakeholders and our staff. Our agile working strategy actively supports and encourages a dynamic work environment and daily working experience. Agile working helps put the needs of our staff at the centre of everything we do, so if specific flexible working arrangements helps you with this, feel free to let us know. This role supports Wandsworth Council only.

Your wellbeing and the flexible way in which you can work is and will remain a key priority for Richmond and Wandsworth Councils. We want you to thrive and feel empowered in your work!

We recognise the importance of a good balance between work and home life so we do everything we can to accommodate flexible working including and other arrangements. Please just let us know in your application or at any stage throughout the process (and beyond) if these are options you’d like to explore. We also offer a generous holiday allowance of 40 paid days (pro rata) including bank holidays and a wide range of learning and development opportunities.

In addition, we offer a comprehensive range of staff benefits such as membership of the Local Government pension scheme, childcare vouchers, new technology scheme, interest-free loans on annual travel cards, discounts with many leisure activities, restaurants, shops and other establishments.
