Community Safety Officer

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity opened up within the Community Safety Team at Richmond and Wandsworth Councils. You will be working with the Shared Staffing Arrangement (SSA) which covers both Richmond and Wandsworth Councils. This role will be covering 7 wards within the locality of Tooting Sector which is an exciting and diverse area of the borough. The responsibilities involve building strong relationships with statutory and voluntary sector organisations, communities, and individuals to collectively address persistent and problematic crime and anti-social behaviour. Your work plan will be delivering priorities and actions against the Richmond and Wandsworth Community Safety Plans 2017-21 which can be found on our council websites.

The Community Safety Officer role is non-uniformed and predominantly non-enforcement as it is a strategic and partnership role which sits within the Community Safety Service and reports directly into the Community Safety Partnership Board. Part of your work you will be required to lead on the coordination of multi-agency problem solving which will involve bringing key partners together through a meeting and agreeing a joint action plan. You will be part of a team of 6 Community Safety Officer’s across Richmond and Wandsworth and may be asked to support these other areas based on the demands of the service. 

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal and an ability to respond appropriately to the audience as you will be in contact with lead members (councillors), residents and senior officers. An understanding of multi-agency problem solving is essential along with knowledge of how key agencies work to make communities safer.

You will be responsible for leading and coordinating key crime prevention work in line with the local community safety plans for Richmond and Wandsworth which may involve community engagement events and commissioning of projects to meet gaps in services within your area.

Knowledge of contextual safeguarding or a trauma informed approach would be useful. Ensuring you familiarise yourself with the councils’ policies as well as key legislation is fundamental to the role. In particular you must have a working knowledge of the ASB, Police and Crime Act 2014.

You will need to have effective problem-solving skills and the ability to produce timely briefings/reports on key initiatives and their outcomes.

Knowledge of the ECINS platform is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
