Lead Maths Teacher - Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service
About Us
Lead Maths Teacher
Salary: MPS/UPS
Full time
Start Date: January 2027
Bring your Maths expertise, initiative and ideas to a setting where personalised teaching helps young people reconnect with learning.
Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service (HHTS) is seeking a skilled and compassionate Maths Teacher to lead the development of mathematics across our provision. We are particularly looking for someone who can take ownership, identify opportunities for improvement, and turn creative ideas into effective teaching and positive outcomes for pupils.
About our service
HHTS is a hospital school and Medical Pupil Referral Unit supporting children and young people aged 5–18 whose physical or mental health needs prevent them from accessing their usual school. Our provision includes St George’s Hospital, the CAMHS Campus School at Springfield Hospital, the Compass Programme, Medical Needs Tuition and Mental Health Outreach, including support for emotionally based school non-attendance (EBSNA).
Through individual and small-group teaching, we help pupils maintain educational continuity, rebuild confidence and work towards qualifications and successful transitions. Our learners have a wide range of attainment and additional needs, including pupils requiring substantial support and those studying at a high academic level.
HHTS was judged Outstanding by Ofsted in October 2023. Our commitment is to enable every child to learn, achieve, and thrive through access to the right support at the right time.
About the role
You will combine direct teaching with subject leadership, shaping a coherent, adaptable maths curriculum, and supporting colleagues to deliver it effectively. You will lead the maths improvement plan, review teaching and assessment, and use evidence of pupils’ progress to guide development.
Teaching will take place across hospital classrooms and wards, Compass, and home or community tuition as allocated. The role involves travelling between sectors and sites, including pupils’ homes. You will work with families, home schools, and clinical colleagues to adapt learning around pupils’ needs and support reintegration.
This is a varied environment where pupil cohorts, health needs, and timetables can change quickly. You will need to organise your work independently, respond flexibly, and know when to seek advice or support.
What we are looking for
- A qualified teacher with QTS, strong maths knowledge and evidence of effective teaching, including GCSE and the ability to support A-level mathematics.
- A proactive subject leader who can set priorities, follow through on improvements and work with limited direction.
- An innovative practitioner who creates engaging learning, evaluates what works and adapts approaches to improve pupils’ progress and confidence.
- A teacher who maintains high expectations while adapting lessons for interrupted education, SEND, physical illness, mental health needs, and EBSNA.
What we offer:
At WHHTS, we value our staff and recognise that feeling supported, trusted and
encouraged is key to driving excellent education.
- Generous PPA time, with the flexibility to undertake offsite.
- A dynamic & friendly team with a shared commitment to inclusive education, who offer consistent support.
- A culture that values kindness, professional expertise and prioritisation of staff wellbeing
- The trust and autonomy to lead your own work, use your initiative and bring fresh ideas.
- Opportunities to develop your knowledge & skills across education, health & wellbeing
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Pension scheme membership
- Cycle to work scheme
