Mayors’ Chauffeur and Macebearer

About Us

We are looking for a Chauffeur and Macebearer to support the Mayor of Wandsworth in discharging their civic duties. The postholder will be required to support events, functions and other duties ensuring the Mayor arrives safely and in a timely manner.

The post holder will also be required to act as Macebearer at council meetings and at other key events such as the annual Mayor Making meeting. 

The postholder must have a full clean driving licence, and be able to plan efficient journey routes. The post will require flexibility with evening and weekend working.

The civic and charitable Mayoral events will mainly be in the borough but you may be required to attend additional events across London.

About the role 

  • Assist the Mayor in their civic duties at functions throughout the year.
  • Perform the ceremonial role of Macebearer at civic events when required.
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge of civic protocol.
  • Ensure the mayoral car is always clean and in good running order.
  • Responsible for the security of the Mayoral regalia and the collection and return of the regalia from a secure location, as required for Mayoral engagements.
  • Plan suitable routes to ensure arrival at the time stated on the Mayor’s engagement sheet.
  • Collect the Mayor or others as directed to ensure arrival at functions.
  • Take photos of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for use on the Mayor’s social media channels.
  • Attend and support the Mayor at functions as required.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of the role of the Mayor and of civic protocol and civic ceremonial arrangements.
  • A full clean UK driving licence with no endorsements or penalty points.
  • A strong focus on customer care, be able to display tact, diplomacy and resilience when dealing with difficult situations.
  • Project a confident and professional image when in the public arena and/or dealing with large groups of people.
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member, using initiative and adapting to changing priorities and deadlines in a calm, well-organised and methodical manner; self-motivated with a flexible approach.
  • Assist with the delivery of events and meetings.
