Senior Conservation Officer

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

The Role

Do you have passion and enthusiasm for the historic built environment?

Do you want to work in one of London’s most exciting historic environments, leading on listed buildings and conservation areas?

We are looking to recruit a qualified Senior Conservation Officer, ideally with full membership of the IHBC or working towards full membership, to provide support, guidance and advice to colleagues within the Planning Service and external stakeholders, including members of the public.

The London Boroughs of Richmond and Wandsworth have a strong reputation for protecting their historic environment. As a Senior Conservation Officer, you will be one of Richmond’s and Wandsworth’s custodians of 85 conservation areas in Richmond and 45 conservation areas in Wandsworth. With hundreds of listed buildings (45 Grade I & over 100 Grade II*) as well as around 10,000 locally listed buildings and 20 Registered Historic Parks and Gardens across the two boroughs, you will have the opportunity to further develop a range of skills necessary for ensuring the best outcomes for the preservation and enhancement of the boroughs’ heritage assets.

You will be based within the Planning Policy and Design team, where there is a small team of specialists dealing with conservation and urban design matters. This role is primarily related to conservation matters and is not expected to deal with or lead on urban design issues.

This is an excellent platform for you to progress a professional career in the historic environment.

In return, we can offer you working arrangements that will enhance your work-life balance.  These include, flexible and home working (dependent on service need), part-time working and a generous holiday allowance of 31 days plus bank holidays.

In addition, we offer a range of staff benefits such as membership of the Local Government contributory pension scheme, childcare vouchers, new technology scheme, interest-free loans on annual travel cards, discounts at many leisure activities, restaurants, shops, and other establishments. A wide range of developmental opportunities are also offered.

Richmond and Wandsworth are currently reviewing our pay, reward and benefits framework, in partnership with Trade Union colleagues. We are developing different options that make sure we have a fair and transparent system in place.
