Who we are:
Wandsworth Council’s Traffic Engineering Division is seeking a Senior Highway/Traffic Engineer who will be responsible for the design & delivery of highway/traffic improvements schemes for Wandsworth and Richmond Upon Thames Councils under the Shared Staffing Arrangement (SSA). This position is based in London Borough of Wandsworth (Hybrid).
The Traffic Engineering Division (Group 3) is a fast moving and dynamic team which will suit a talented and ambitious traffic/highway engineer seeking to take the next step in their career. You will be working in a stimulating and supportive environment, where you will have the opportunity to pursue an engineering professional qualification.
About the role:
As a Senior Engineer, you will be an integral part of the team, responsible for design & construction of the Council’s public realm, cycling, active travel, and road safety improvement schemes. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to work on a wide range of engineering projects for a fantastic local council. You will have the responsibility of overseeing a small number of assistant engineers and assisting with Principal Engineer with day-to-day management of projects.
You will:
- Have direct responsibility for the delivery of schemes from design to implementation. You work will cover the feasibility, design, consultation, and construction of highway/traffic engineering schemes.
- Have experience of project management, ensuring schemes are delivered to time and budget.
- Have experience of highway scheme design using AutoCAD and other relevant software packages.
- Have an opportunity to manage/supervise assistant engineers and other technical support staff and deputise for the Principal Engineer as required.
- Have experience of delivering high quality highway/traffic engineering schemes in accordance with technical specifications, guidance, and legislation such as CDM 2015, TSRGD, DMRB, TSM, Highways Act & NRSWA.
- Have excellent communication skills and an ability to manage priorities and collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, both internally and externally.
- Have excellent written skills with the ability to produce reports, consultation material and feasibility studies.
- Be able to provide operational and motivational leadership of staff.
- Be able to deliver excellent customer service by ensuring all member queries about service delivery are dealt with promptly and effectively.
- Be able to advise and support senior managers on relevant service and operational matters.

About you:
- You will have sound knowledge and experience of delivering & managing high quality highway/traffic engineering schemes.
- You will have sound knowledge and experience of the use and application of highways/traffic engineering related design guidance, legislation, health, and safety requirements.
- You have working knowledge of asset management, prioritising, and programming of schemes.
- You will have sound knowledge and experience of scheme design using AutoCAD and other relevant software packages.
- You will have appropriate professional engineering qualification and/or at least 5 years highway/traffic engineering experience in private and/or local government setting.
