Due to an increase in the number of students on roll, the Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service (HHTS) has developed a pilot programme for students who have experienced long term emotionally based school non-attendance/avoidance, mental health challenges and some additional special educational needs. We now have an exciting opportunity for a suitably experienced teacher to join our creative, supportive, and enthusiastic team of hospital schoolteachers across St George’s Hospital and Springfield Hospital. The role is primarily working with students on our Compass programme, who are experiencing significant challenges around attending their school, their wellbeing and mental health. The successful candidate will become part of our highly collaborative and supportive hospital teaching team. There is a comprehensive training and induction package to support our new teachers in the role and further develop their professional expertise as specialists in mental health and hospital education.

Students within this class have been missing from education for a significant amount of time and are learning to re-engage with both a daily routine and in a small class. The teacher assigned to this classroom will be required to plan, assess and deliver an innovative and interactive curriculum, including English and maths, that will both engage but also challenge and stretch the students. The teacher should be either be familiar with/or willing to upskills to deliver functional skills and entry level certificate. The service welcomes outdoor and community learning and so the candidate must be prepared to engage students on regular trips and outings to both inspire but also support their independence and develop skills needed for everyday life.
Teachers will also work with a range of clinical professionals to build effective support models for the students during their admission and post-discharge. All our teachers and Educational Care Coordinators have the opportunity to teach across the hospital sectors.
