The Wandsworth Autism Advisory Service (WAAS) is seeking a full-time Speech and Language Therapist for a maternity cover position spanning one year. This is a split post (0.6 WAAS and 0.4 St George’s Trust MDA team) and offers a unique chance to work across two dynamic teams, all based within the same building.
About the role
WAAS is a neurodiverse-affirming service that provides expert advice, support, and interventions for children and young people with autism, their families, and education settings.
You’ll also collaborate with the multi-disciplinary St George’s NHS Trust team, contributing to autism diagnosis and clinical interventions.
Your Role
- WAAS Responsibilities (3 days):
* Work within a multi-disciplinary team (teachers, educational psychologists, occupational therapists, multi-therapy assistants, and family workers).
* Provide support to education settings to meet the needs of children with autism and social communication differences (SCD).
* Deliver high-quality training to families and professionals.
* Implement intervention programs and group work in schools and early years (EY) settings.o Oversee and advise multi- therapy assistants.
* Receive clinical supervision from WAAS’s Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist
• St George’s NHS Trust Responsibilities (2 days):
* Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team with an honorary NHS contract.
* Support clinical assessments and the autism diagnostic process.
* Collect parent and child information to inform autism assessments.
* Deliver interventions and receive clinical supervision from senior practitioners.
* Note: ADOS qualification is desirable but not essential.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Strong understanding of autism and neurodiverse-affirming practices.
- Ability to deliver training to professionals and families.
- Proficiency in planning and implementing interventions for children and young people across various settings.
- Effective communication skills for engaging with families, children, and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Competence in supervising and advising therapy assistants.
- Organizational skills to manage responsibilities across two teams.
- Familiarity with delivering clinical assessments and interventions.
