Term Time Only - 39 weeks per year
Smallwood is a one and a half form entry school with a Language Unit for 40 pupils, which is situated in a vibrant and diverse community. We have an ongoing commitment to improving standards for all pupils and to further developing our provision and drive to meet their needs. We are currently looking to expand our highly motivated and enthusiastic team of support staff to support individual pupils and small groups.
We are passionate about the education of our children, continuous professional development of all staff and a strong partnership with parents and the wider community.
Within the Language Unit all pupils have an EHCP who have communication and language disorders including Autism. It is important to us that all adults contribute to the growth and development of every child and support their individual needs.
This role requires initiative and flexibility as well as a commitment to supporting complex children to reach their full potential. Our children do use alternative communication systems, such as Makaton signing and PECS. Skills in the use of these systems would be desirable. Experience of working in a special needs setting is also desirable. You will be positive and enthusiastic in your approach and will seek to provide the opportunity for the children you are working with to achieve their full potential, both academically and socially.
You will work under the direction of the class teacher and will be expected to support individuals and small groups of children. A minimum of G.C.S.E. grade C or above in English and Maths and NVQ Level 3 in Childcare or relevant extensive experience is required. You will work not only with the class teacher, but with other Language Unit professionals, including, Speech and Language and Occupational Therapists on a daily basis.
