About the Role
Are you skilled in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and plant machinery? We are seeking a dedicated Transport Technician to ensure the smooth operation of our fleet. The ideal candidate will possess a robust working knowledge of vehicle inspectorate standards, MOT testing standards, and electrical hydraulic systems. Your expertise will be crucial in servicing and repairing a variety of plant machinery.
We value experience and are looking for someone with a proven track record as a workshop/transport technician/mechanic. Your history should include maintaining and repairing both standard and heavy goods vehicles. Your skill set should also encompass strong communication abilities, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the capacity to manage and prioritize tasks effectively. Objective of the role
To ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the Council’s fleet by inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of vehicles and plant equipment to DVSA standards. The role supports service delivery by carrying out routine servicing, responding to breakdowns (including call‑outs), managing necessary parts ordering and documentation, and, where required, performing MOT testing or transporting vehicles for MOT inspections. The post holder must work independently, communicate effectively with staff and the public, and meet required deadlines to maintain the reliability and legal compliance of the Council’s vehicles and machinery.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
You will need:
Broad knowledge- hands‑on experience in maintaining HGVs, light vehicles, welfare buses, commercial vehicles, and plant equipment.
Strong diagnostic capability, including use and interpretation of computerised diagnostic tools for petrol, diesel, light and heavy vehicles.
Expertise in specialised systems, including vehicle‑mounted cranes, electro/hydraulic equipment, and passenger/goods tail‑lift systems.
Knowledge of Road Transport Motor Vehicle Regulations and mixed fleet operations.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, able to work with staff and the public at all levels.
Ability to manage and prioritise varied workloads, remaining effective under pressure and in emergency situations, with an enthusiastic and adaptable approach to learning.
Qualifications- To obtain or be willing to train for a category C licence, Level 3 NVQ and Level 2 City & Guilds or equivalent motor vehicle service and repair qualifications and Full UK Drivers Licence
